Peter Haynes was born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent. His father Captain Haynes, was a clergyman, and was appointed Billeting Officer for Stoke in 1939.

Peter remembers the skills and habits demanded of a man in his father’s position, from begging lifts to requisitioning empty property. In the audio clip below Peter describes his father’s many duties during the war:-
